Lewis’ Birthday
How does it feel to be a mommy? That’s been the question of the year. My response- it’s been an adjustment. Let me explain…
Am I happy to be a mom?- YES!
Am I always tired?- YES!
Does my heart skip a beat with every baby laugh and coo?- YES!
Do I feel lonely some days when the only person I talk to can barely keep eye contact, let alone say anything?- YES!
Do I have a deeper appreciation for my parents? – YES!
Have I binge watched too many sitcoms on Netflix? – YES!
Do I get a deep sense of relief when it’s bed time? – YES!
Do I miss his face 30 minutes after he goes to sleep? – YES- what is going on?
Did you follow all that? You see becoming a mom is an adjustment and one that I didn’t quite understand until I was in the role. Sure, you have 9 months to prepare yourself for parenthood, but once that little sack of potatoes is placed in your arms, reality hits you- I have no idea what the hell I’m doing!
But it’s ok- maternal instincts kick in (not to mention hormones) and you quickly learn that each day (still) is a learning process for you and baby. Have I made mistakes? OH YEA! Each one I make reminds me that I am only human and there is room for grace (LOTS of grace).
July 2014 marked one year in this new role as Mom. So what did we do? Threw an awesome party…to celebrate THE KING! (Yea, most celebrations are child focused these days…no worries, you get used to taking the back seat…especially when your child is this cute!)
Friends and family in and out of town came to celebrate the first year of our Little Lew’s life. There was a taco bar, presents, rice krispie treats, cookies, cake and lots of love! Take a look…
Want an easy way to feed a crowd? Two words- Taco bar! We served beef, chicken and Black Bean Picadillo as the taco base proteins and supplied a myriad of toppings! Everyone enjoyed making their own taco creation plus it was pretty easy to create!
Since we went with a “Royal” birthday theme, I made a castle smash cake! I was pretty proud of this one…and Little Lew enjoyed it too! PLUS we made “crown” cookies to pass out as favors for our guests. My philosophy is the best favor is one you can eat!
I am not big crafter, but when I do, Pinterest is my saving grace. His crown and cape were a result of two pins I found. Check them out on my “Birthday, Birthday, Birthday” board!
Little Lew received many gifts , but I think his favorite was this small package of puffs. This kid definitely got his appetite from me. #proudmom!
The King’s celebration was a HUGE success! When all our guests left and the fanfare was over we were able to explore his new toys! As I was observing my son, it dawned on me that we are in the process of a new transition- toddler-hood!
He’s definitely not a baby anymore which makes me a little sad inside because I realize that he is growing up so fast! I guess that’s why our parents tell us that we will always be their baby. They are hanging on to moments like this so they don’t lose us too quickly.
So thank you, Little Lew, for the wild ride this year! Looking forward our next run on the rollercoaster!
Love you,
Mom
